The Politics of James Bond $14.98 The adventures and antics of James Bond have provided the world with many of the most gripping story lines of the last half-century. Fleming’s novels were bestsellers in their day, and the Bond films have been even more popular, becoming the most enduring and successful film franchise in history. By some estimates, half of the world’s population has seen a James Bond movie. A fascinating and accessible account of this global phenomenon, The Politics of James Bond uses the plots and characterizations in the novels and the blockbuster films to place Bond in a historical, cultural, and political context. Jeremy Black charts and explores how the settings and the dynamics of the Bond adventures have changed over time in response to shifts in the real-world environment in which the fictional Bond operates. Sex, race, class, and violence are each important factors, as Agent 007 evolves from Cold War warrior to foe of SPECTRE and eventually to world defender pitted against megalomaniacal foes. The development of Bond, his leading ladies, and the major plots all shed light on world political attitudes and reflect elements of the real espionage history of the period. This analysis of Bond’s world and his lasting legacy offers an insightful look at both cultural history and popular entertainment. |

Ian Fleming & James Bond $15.98 The Cold War agent of pulp fiction and the hero of more than a dozen movies, James Bond, also known as 007, is one of pop culture's most recognizable icons. Doubtless better known from film than from Ian Fleming's novels, the character has become a lightning rod for criticism from all camps. And yet somehow his popularity remains intact. But who is James Bond? Ian Fleming and James Bond: The Cultural Politics of 007 is an entertaining and revealing examination of the many facets of Bond. Before Bond became a cinematic icon, he was the protagonist of a series of thrillers that appeared during the time of Britain's decline as a major power and the heating up of the Cold War. Fleming's character gave expression to biases and anxieties that continue to shape our political worldview in ways both obvious and covert. Fifteen spirited and engaging essays—all new to this volume—cover topics including Bond's Britishness, James Bond and JFK, homosexual panic and lesbian Bond-age, the James Bond lifestyle, and Bond's brands. The contributors are Alexis Albion, Dennis W. Allen, James Chapman, Edward P. Comentale, Vivian Halloran, Jaime Hovey, Aaron Jaffe, Christoph Lindner, Andrew Lycett, Patrick O'Donnell, Craig N. Owens, Brian Patton, Judith Roof, Stephen Watt, and Skip Willman. |

The James Bond Songbook [BGP] $13.28 The James Bond Songbook, as even the liner notes for the 2006 CD of the LP on BGP admit, was a cash-in album on the craze for all things James Bond that had enveloped the world by the mid-'60s. Cleverly, the record was titled to be credited to the James Bond Sextet -- even though such an ensemble didn't really exist -- as the bassist was indeed named James Bond, though he usually went by the name of Jimmy Bond as a Los Angeles session man. Even by the standards of exploitation albums, however, this might be a disappointment. Not for the quality of the music, which is pretty competent cool jazz, but because, though all 12 of the song titles are taken from Ian Fleming novels that were made into films (excepting Monty Norman's famous "James Bond Theme"), in fact the majority of these are not the soundtrack themes actually used in the movies. For when this came out in 1965, just four of these movies had actually been made. That means that only "Thunderball," "From Russia with Love," "007 Theme from Dr. No," and "Goldfinger" (as well as "James Bond Theme") correspond to the themes actually heard on the soundtracks. The rest of the numbers are small combo jazz instrumental compositions by Bond and Warren Baker that were inspired by the novels of the same titles. So those tracks don't sound particularly Bond-movie-like in either melody or arrangement, and even the five interpretations of themes actually used in Bond films are far jazzier and less menacing than the arrangements with which most Bond viewers are most familiar. It's not a bad record at all, and yes, by the standards of cash-in albums, the execution is well above average. Just realize what you're getting into, though, if you pick it up with the expectations that the music will be strongly related to the kind of music usually associated with the soundtracks of films featuring the James Bond character. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music GuidePerformers: James E. Bond - Bass; Bobby Bryant - Trumpet; Buddy Collette - Flute, Sax (Tenor); Harold Land - Sax (Tenor); Joe Parnello - Piano |

Living Daylights, The (James Bond) $13.46 The Living Daylights represents the first appearance by Timothy Dalton as Bond...James Bond. Based very, very loosely on an obscure Ian Fleming short story, the film finds Bond assigned to aid in the defection of KGB agent Jeroen Krabbe. 007 must prevent an unknown sniper from killing Krabbe before he can reach the West. The mysterious assailant turns out to be the luscious Maryam d'Abo, who like practically everyone in the film except Bond is Not All That She Seems. The plot wends its way through a scheme to trade several million dollars' worth of diamonds for weapons, which will be shipped off to mercenaries worldwide. The climax takes place high above the clouds in a cargo plane loaded with opium. Dalton would play Bond one more time in License to Kill (1989) before handing the franchise over to Pierce Brosnan. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide |

Goldfinger (James Bond) $13.46 With Goldfinger, the James Bond series took a turn away from relatively straightforward spy thrillers and toward campy gadgetry, extravagant sets, and kitschy jokes. Bond (Sean Connery) has to prevent a notorious gold smuggler, appropriately named Goldfinger (Gert Fröbe), from robbing Fort Knox. Goldfinger is surrounded by evil henchmen such as the sexy female pilot Pussy Galore (Honor Blackman) and Oddjob (Harold Sakata), who kills with his steel-rimmed bowler hats. In order to stop Goldfinger, Bond has to survive several perilous situations, including a huge, deadly laser. Goldfinger is one of the most popular films in the James Bond series, and it set the tone not only for the rest of the series but also for most of the action/adventure films of the late '60s and early '70s. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Movie Guide laser beam, Oddjob's razor-sharp bowler hat, and Bond's modified Aston Martin car, the film is quite possibly the most memorable Bond outing, and would be famously parodied decades later in the AUSTIN POWERS series, particularly GOLDMEMBER. |
