The James Bond Songbook [BGP] $13.28 The James Bond Songbook, as even the liner notes for the 2006 CD of the LP on BGP admit, was a cash-in album on the craze for all things James Bond that had enveloped the world by the mid-'60s. Cleverly, the record was titled to be credited to the James Bond Sextet -- even though such an ensemble didn't really exist -- as the bassist was indeed named James Bond, though he usually went by the name of Jimmy Bond as a Los Angeles session man. Even by the standards of exploitation albums, however, this might be a disappointment. Not for the quality of the music, which is pretty competent cool jazz, but because, though all 12 of the song titles are taken from Ian Fleming novels that were made into films (excepting Monty Norman's famous "James Bond Theme"), in fact the majority of these are not the soundtrack themes actually used in the movies. For when this came out in 1965, just four of these movies had actually been made. That means that only "Thunderball," "From Russia with Love," "007 Theme from Dr. No," and "Goldfinger" (as well as "James Bond Theme") correspond to the themes actually heard on the soundtracks. The rest of the numbers are small combo jazz instrumental compositions by Bond and Warren Baker that were inspired by the novels of the same titles. So those tracks don't sound particularly Bond-movie-like in either melody or arrangement, and even the five interpretations of themes actually used in Bond films are far jazzier and less menacing than the arrangements with which most Bond viewers are most familiar. It's not a bad record at all, and yes, by the standards of cash-in albums, the execution is well above average. Just realize what you're getting into, though, if you pick it up with the expectations that the music will be strongly related to the kind of music usually associated with the soundtracks of films featuring the James Bond character. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music GuidePerformers: James E. Bond - Bass; Bobby Bryant - Trumpet; Buddy Collette - Flute, Sax (Tenor); Harold Land - Sax (Tenor); Joe Parnello - Piano |

World Is Not Enough, The (James Bond) $13.46 James Bond, the world's greatest secret agent, is sent once more into the breach in the name of Queen, Country, and a dry martini. In the 19th Bond adventure, 007 (Pierce Brosnan) must resolve a potentially deadly power struggle between two unstable nations, with control of the world's oil supply as the ultimate prize. Bond is assigned as bodyguard to Elektra King (Sophie Marceau), the daughter of a petroleum magnate who was brutally murdered, and is trying to foil the fiendish plot of Renard (Robert Carlyle), a villain who was shot in the head with an unusual result: he cannot feel physical pain, an apparent failing that proves to be a considerable asset. Denise Richards appears as Dr. Christmas Jones, an expert on nuclear weapons, alongside Desmond Llewelyn as Q, Judi Dench as M, Samantha Bond as Miss Moneypenny, and John Cleese as R. Alternative rock band Garbage performs the theme song. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide rousing theme song from alternative rock band Garbage make this a worthy addition to the 007 series. The film also marks the 17th and final appearance of Desmond Llewelyn as Q; John Cleese is introduced as Q's successor, R. |

Best of Bond...James Bond: 40th Anniversary Edition [Bonus Track] $15.98 One of the signature aspects of a James Bond movie is its theme song, and, as demonstrated on this collection of those songs, there is a remarkable consistency to them. 1962's Dr. No, the first Bond film, featured Monty Norman's "James Bond Theme," a distinctive instrumental piece that has figured in every Bond picture since and that leads off the disc. But with the second entry in the series, 1963's From Russia With Love, there was a specially written title song sung by a contemporary pop artist during the opening credits. And as of the third entry, 1964's Goldfinger, that song, as often as not, would become a hit. Shirley Bassey's melodramatic performance of "Goldfinger" remains a standard for Bond themes, but, just as the films have been subtly updated through the years, so the theme songs have reflected changes in pop music. Echoes and approximations of Norman's theme turn up over and over as a basis for the songs, even though they make room for individual interpretation. For example, Gladys Knight's "License to Kill" from 1989 may be an '80s power ballad complete with synthesizer accompaniment, but it still uses familiar orchestral elements. And some of the least-characteristic songs are also some of the most successful. Carly Simon's "Nobody Does It Better" doesn't even use a film title, yet it is one of the better-remembered theme songs. Many of the artists who sing the songs are pop footnotes (a-ha, Sheena Easton), but they were hot when they were asked to participate, and their performances hold up. [Originally released in 1999, the album was reissued in a 40th anniversary edition in 2002 containing three additional tracks, one of which was Garbage's theme song for The World Is Not Enough and another, Moby's electronica-styled reconstruction of the original theme. It was reissued again in 2008 with Madonna's contribution to 2002's Die Another Day and Soundgarden/Audioslave front man Chris Cornell's "You Know My Name" from 2006's Casino Royale, the first film to feature Daniel Craig as James Bond.] ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi |

Die Another Day (James Bond) $13.46 Pierce Brosnan makes his fourth appearance as suave super-spy James Bond in this espionage thriller, the 20th film in the official Bond series. While on assignment in North Korea, Bond is captured by government agents, where he's imprisoned and tortured for over a year. When Bond finally wins his freedom, not everyone is certain 007 is still capable of doing the job, but after Zao (Rick Yune), the North Korean operative who snared Bond, is discovered to be in cahoots with unscrupulous entrepreneur Gustav Graves (Toby Stephens), Bond is back on the case, and he finds the two men have sinister plans which could decide the fate of the world. As Bond hops from England to Cuba to Korea to Iceland in pursuit of his quarry, he (as usual) makes the acquaintance of two beautiful and mysterious women, Jinx (Halle Berry) and Miranda Frost (Rosamund Pike). Judi Dench and John Cleese return in Die Another Day as, respectively, Bond's superior M and gadget-master Q; Madonna contributes the film's theme song and makes a cameo appearance as a fencing instructor. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide Brosnan is in fine form as the iconic hero, while Berry shines as the immediately likeable Jinx. Stephens and Yune make excellent bad guys, and the rest of the cast--including Judi Dench, John Cleese, Rosamund Pike, and Michael Madsen--provide key supporting roles. With its hi-tech gadgets and special-effects-laden set pieces, DIE ANOTHER DAY clearly has its eye on the future, but in numerous scenes it also lovingly embraces the past, placing the film in the upper tier of Bond movies. |

Jazz: The American Theme Song $42.21 Praised by the Washington Post as a tough, unblinked critic , James Lincoln Collier is probably the most controversial writer on jazz today. With the publication of Jazz: The American Theme Song , Collier does nothing to soften his reputation for hard-hitting, incisive commentary. Questioning everything we think we know about jazz-- its origins, its innovative geniuses, the importance of improvisation and spontaneous inspiration in a performance-- and the jazz world, these ten provocative essays on the music and its place in American culture overturn tired assumptions and will alternately enrage, enlighten, and entertain. Jazz: The Americna Theme Song offers music lovers razor-sharp analysis of musical trends and styles, and fearless explorations of the most potentially explosive issues in jazz today. Collier argues, for example, that although jazz was originally devised by African Americans from black folk music, jazz has long been a part of the cultural heritage of musicians and audiences of all races and classes, and is not black music per se. Impeccably researched and informed by Collier's wide-ranging intellect. Jazz: The American Theme Song is an important look at jazz's past, its present, and its uncertain future. It is a book everyone who cares about the music will want to read. |

Live and Let Die (James Bond) $13.46 Roger Moore makes his first appearance as Bond...James Bond in 1973's Live and Let Die. Bond is dispatched to the States to stem the activities of Mr. Big (Yaphet Kotto), who plans to take over the Western Hemisphere by converting everyone into heroin addicts. The woman in the case is Solitaire (Jane Seymour in her movie debut), an enigmatic interpreter of tarot cards. The obligatory destructive-chase sequence occurs at the film's midpoint, with Bond being chased in a motorboat by Mr. Big's henchmen, slashing his way through the marshlands and smashing up a wedding party. Clifton James makes the first of several Bond appearances as redneck sheriff Pepper, while Geoffrey Holder is an enthusiastic secondary villain. The title song, written by Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney, provides the frosting on this 007 confection. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide |
