When Daniel Craig was formally announced as the new James Bond, debuting in Casino Royale, not all fans were delighted. But Craig proved them wrong, winning universal acclaim for his riskier, grittier Bond—inexperienced, insecure and troubled by killing. Beginning with his early career, Daniel O'Brien traces the provocative choices Craig has made along the path to becoming one of the world's most famous film icons. When a BBC television performance brought film offers, Craig opted to co-star in Love is the Devil, as artist Francis Bacon’s violent, self-destructive lover. The much-derided Lara Croft: Tomb Raider film raised his US profile, but Craig passed on the sequel. His subsequent Hollywood career did not follow the expected route. O'Brien shows how Craig shunned lead roles to establish himself as a forceful character actor. In Road to Perdition, Craig played a cold blooded child killer. Back in the UK, he co-starred in The Mother, having an affair with a woman twice his age. His Hollywood choices remained dark and edgy: feminist hate figure Ted Hughes in Sylvia and a troubled Mossad agent in Munich. Intriguingly, Craig avoids the show business circuit: "I don’t believe in self-promotion, really I can’t be arsed."

DIVHe's gorgeous, tremendously talented, charming, and sexy. His breathtaking performance as the new James Bond inICasino Royale/Iwon him legions of fans and proved that, as well as being an outstanding actor, he could cut it as an action hero and could re-define a cinematic icon to huge critical acclaim. Daniel Craig has truly made it as an A-list film star. This fascinating and affectionate book reveals everything about Hollywood's newest leading man—how he endured poverty-stricken years when he was first struggling to make it as an actor in London; how he rejected the trivial publicity that came when he started to make a name for himself; his relationships, including his marriage to a British actress with whom he has a daughter; plus his encounters with Sienna Miller and Kate Moss; and how he has handled the adulation that has come from his new role as 007./DIVDIVSarah Marshall is the author ofIJennifer Aniston/I,ILindsay's Secrets/I, andISienna's Story/I./DIV

New York

New York

The companion volume to the PBS television series, with more than 500 full-color and black-and-white illustrationsThis lavish and handsomely produced book captures all the beauty, complexity, and power of New York -- the city that seems the very embodiment of ambition, aspiration, romance, desire; the city that has epitomized the entire parade of modern life, with all its possibilities and problems. Chronicling the story of New York from its establishment as a Dutch trading post in 1624 to its global preeminence today, the book is at once the biography of a great city and a vivid exploration of the myriad forces -- commercial, cultural, demographic -- that converged in New York to usher in the contemporary world.Weaving the strands of the city's sweeping history into a single compelling narrative, New York carries us through nearly four centuries of turbulent growth and change -- from the first settlement on the tip of "Manna-hata" Island to the destruction wrought by the Revolutionary War; to the city's stunning emergence in the nineteenth century as the nation's premier industrial metropolis; to the waves of early-twentieth-century immigration that forever transformed the city and the nation; to New York's transfiguration as the world's first modern city -- pioneering skyscrapers, apartment houses, subways, and highways -- and its role as the birthplace of so much of American popular culture. Along the way, we witness the building of the city's celebrated landmarks and neighborhoods, from the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty to the Empire State Building and the United Nations; from Wall Street and Times Square to the Lower East Side, Harlem, and SoHo.The book brims with vibrant illustrations, including hundreds of rare photographs, paintings, lithographs, prints, and period maps. The narrative incorporates the voices and stories of men and women -- statesmen, entrepreneurs, artists, and visionaries -- who have lived in and built the city: an extraordinary cast of characters that includes Peter Stuyvesant, Alexander Hamilton, John Jacob Astor, Walt Whitman, Boss Tweed, Jacob Riis, Emma Lazarus, J. P. Morgan, Al Smith, F. Scott Fitzgerald, George Gershwin, Fiorello La Guardia, Robert Moses, and Jane Jacobs.Accompanying the book's narrative are interviews with Robert A. Caro, David Levering Lewis, and Robert A. M. Stern, and essays by a group of distinguished New York historians and critics -- Kenneth T. Jackson, Mike Wallace, Marshall Berman, Phillip Lopate, Carol Berkin, and Daniel Czitrom -- who add their insights about the city to this splendid history.

Like Wescott's extraordinary novella The Pilgrim Hawk (which Susan Sontag described in The New Yorker as belonging "among the treasures of 20th-century American literature"), Apartment in Athens concerns an unusual triangular relationship. In this story about a Greek couple in Nazi-occupied Athens who must share their living quarters with a German officer, Wescott stages an intense and unsettling drama of accommodation and rejection, resistance and compulsion—an account of political oppression and spiritual struggle that is also a parable about the costs of closeted identity.

When the four strangers attempt to move into the apartment on the same day, they realize they’ve been swindled. Will the “Gang of Four” come to an amicable agreement, or will they gladly cross moral boundaries in their efforts to secure their right to the apartment? Will their alliances remain intact, or will allegiances shift? Crackling with suspense and filled with double-crosses, Who Gets the Apartment? will keep you reading late into the night.

Joe's Apartment -

This film is based on an innovative short film made for MTV about a guy living in a horrible downtown apartment filled with scores of mischievous, smart-alecky roaches. The story chronicles the adventures of Joe (Jerry O'Connell), a hapless rube from the rural Midwest who journeys to the wilds of New York City. Mugged repeatedly on his arrival, his luck seems to turn when he finds an affordable apartment in a very dubious neighborhood. Unfortunately, his landlord (Don Ho) is more interested in evicting or, if need be, murdering his tenants, so that the building can be turned into a (highly profitable) penitentiary. Joe finds the allies he needs in his apartment's cockroaches, who sing and dance their way into his heart. This film should be of interest for fans of 1930s musicals; it makes reference to Busby Berkeley's elaborate dance phantasmagorias and the odd water ballets of Esther Williams. Many of the scenes utilized real roaches who were "choreographed" via tiny filament harnesses and other devices. Animal rights activists will be pleased to note that no roaches were intentionally harmed during filming. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

"Half my time and energy as a New Yorker is given to keeping all aspects of the outside world outside; to such a degree that it might seem as if I were manning the walls of some medieval fortress, the only difference being that the Goths, and the Huns, and the other marauding hordes of centuries past had nothing on, say, those restaurant guys who shove menus under your door. . . ."Thousands of readers first discovered Danny Drennan through his addictive on-line weekly wrap-ups of Beverly Hills 90210. Now here are his manic, wickedly funny stream-of-consciousness riffs on the uncelebrated but all-too-familiar daily dramas that could only take place in New York City. The trauma of brunch on the Upper West Side, the secret society of snooty dog owners, the diabolical subway-token clerks, the neighbor upstairs who perpetually carries trash in to the apartment but never out: Drennan chronicles his misadventures in the urban mosaic with comic edginess, irreverence, and a sardonic wit that are unmistakably his own.The New York Diaries draws us into the singular world of Daniel Drennan--and announces the arrival of an irresistible new writer.Contents:                Why I Stay            Schadenfreude            Real Estate            Moving            Brooklyn            The Building            Street Life            Brunch            RodentiaDog People            Pet Neurosis            Infrastructure            The Subway            The Neighborhood            The Neighbors            Coming Out            The Job            Why I Stay?
